Ravens Inn, Danes Gate, Hindley

Started by: annron1928 (135)

On the 1861 census William Prescott's address is given as Ravens Inn, Danes Gate Hindley, I'm trying to work out where this would be. I know there is a Danes Ave and a Deansgate, both off Bridge St and I have tried to follow the 1861 census enumerators track but still can't work exactly where it would be, anybody any ideas.

On the 8th Nov. 1861 William Prescott was killed in a pit accident, because he died in the pit his death certificate doesn't give his home address, but on the burial record on OPC it gives his address as Vipers Alley, I presume Hindley because he was buried at All Saints Church, Hindley, anybody know where this was.

On the 1849 map(Genuki.co.uk old maps of Hindley) Vipers Alley is in the area you described Deansgate and Danes Avenue near to the old Danes House off Bridge Street

According to "Pictures of Hindley and Hindley Green" by J. Lowe, Deansgate was known as Vipers Alley.

ISBN 0 9507822 3 8 From 1989, page 27. Maybe out of print.

Thanks Dave, so then the Ravens Inn must have stood on Deansgate in 1861, I have been down to the History Shop but didn't find any reference to the Ravens Inn.

I've also heard it referred to as "Pipers Alley."

www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Hindley/
Then click maps on right hand side
old maps Hindley
mid 19th century maps and select 1849
Sorry I cannot do a quicker link but as dave says Deansgate and Vipers Alley are same area possibly Vipers Alley was longer than Deansgate on the same side of the brook.

Wonder where the name came from Vipers/Pipers, it's certainly a funny name.

Thanks Dave for the photo it's really very interesting. I was brought up in Hindley and have walked up Deansgate many times, but obviously it doesn't look like it does on the photo, it looks much wider on the photo than it looks now, but the properties on the right of the photo look pretty much the same today and also the Lord Nelson hasn't changed much.

As you continue up past the properties on the right there is a very old small cottage, I don't know the date it was built but its still there, it's very small and stands on it's own.

Pickton John, beer retailer, 23 Deansgate, wonder if this could've been the Raven? I'm not au fait with the regulations at the time, but, some pubs could only sell beer, not wines or spirits, hence retailer status.

Thanks Dave that's interesting, also listed in the 1869 directory is an Oliver Ormrod beer retailer DEANSDALE, don't know if this could be the same place, but it looks like there was certainly an Inn of some sort for a period of time on Deansgate.

Also on the 1861 census for William Prescott he doesn't say he's a publican he states he's a beer seller so that would fit with the some pubs could only sell beer thing.

Hi

I have an interest in Deansgate etc

in 1841 the family are living in Vipers Alley
in 1851 the family are listed as living at "22 Deans Gate"
by 1861 the head of the household had died in the January at Vipers Alley and the family then live at Danes Gate (no number spcified but 6 entries from Raven's Inn) by the census of that year
by 1863 the mother of the family had died also in Vipers Alley (again no number of the property specified)

coincidentally the grandmother had married on 3 Jan 1822 in Wigan, Lancs to a John PRESCOTT and was living in Close Lanes

Hi Gwenda

Dave hasn't posted on here for four years now, and the original thread was started 13 years ago, but someone else may be able to help. Annron hasn't posted since 2016.

Have you looked in Photos of Wigan? The link is at the very top, second from the left. There are loads of photos in there.
